Abstract
The nonthiazide diuretics, furosemide, ethacrynic acid, chlorthalidone, Bayer 1500 and triamterene, which act as diuretics in man, have been shown to be hyperglycemic in rats. There is no correlation with diuretic activity at comparable dosages. Ex 4877, an experimental compound which antagonizes the saluretic effect of thiazides, is also hyperglycemic. Other reports of the hyperglycemic effects of these drugs are discussed. It is suggested that the etiology of the hyperglycemia from these drugs is not related to their renal activity and may be multifactorial.
