Abstract
Agents known to affect microtubules were examined for their effect on catecholamine release from the perfused bovine adrenal gland. Colchicine caused a reversible inhibition of catecholamine release induced by nicotine or acetylcholine. Vinblastine and vincristine also produced an inhibition of nicotineinduced catecholamine release. The effect of nicotine on catecholamine release was potentiated when H2O was replaced with D2O (35% v/v). Similarities between these results and the effects of these drugs on the release of other secretory products have been noted. The present findings suggest that microtubule-like elements participate in the release of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla and this may reflect a general involvement of microtubular elements in exocytosis.
