Synthetic glucocorticoids used in the treatment of cSLE include prednisone, prednisolone, hydrocortisone, and methylprednisolone (6-α methylprednisolone); the latter is chemically identical to prednisolone with the exception of a carbon group at position 6 [9]. The structure of the synthetic glucocorticoid hydrocortisone is chemically identical to that of the endogenous glucocorticoid cortisol [10].
