TY - JOUR T1 - THE EFFECT OF CALCIUM AND STRONTIUM SALTS ON THE ACTION OF SODIUM PENTOBARBITAL JF - Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics JO - J Pharmacol Exp Ther SP - 335 LP - 342 VL - 73 IS - 3 AU - VERSA V. COLE Y1 - 1941/11/01 UR - http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/73/3/335.abstract N2 - 1. Both calcium and strontium acetates increased the duration of sodium pentobarbital anesthesia when the salts were given in equimolecular quantities by intraperitoneal injection. 2. Calcium acetate increased the duration of sodium pentobarbital anesthesia when given by vein. Strontium acetate had very little if any effect. 3. Calcium acetate was more toxic to the rat by intraperitoneal injection than strontium acetate. 4. The greater toxicity of the calcium by intraperitoneal injection was shown to be associated with an increased hemoglobin concentration of the blood. 5. Sodium pentobarbital decreased the toxicity of strontium acetate but strontium acetate did not decrease the toxicity of sodium pentobarbital. ER -
