The administration of physostigmine abolishes the sympathetic paralysis produced by nicotine. The ganglionic paralytic effect of nicotine and curare exerted in the autonomic system is opposed by physostigmine, but not by pilocarpine. Atropine prevents the ganglionic effect of physostigmine. An explanation is offered for this ganglionic "stimulant" effect of physostigmine.
