THE APPLICATION OF BIOMETRIC METHODS TO DIGITALIS STANDARDIZATION JF - Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics JO - J Pharmacol Exp Ther SP - 99 LP - 109 VL - 39 IS - 1 AU - WILLIAM NYIRI AU - LOUIS DUBOIS Y1 - 1930/05/01 UR - http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/39/1/99.abstract N2 - The paper deals with the question of whether or not biometric methods may be practically applied to digitalis standardization. The formula of Van Wijngaarden, which is in use at present and generally accepted, allows too wide a range of variation. The discarding of extreme variants as recommended in connection with the formula must not influence the numerical final result materially. The official terms of probability should be applied with the utmost care for biological experiments in general, for the standardization of heart tonics in particular, as they might be misleading. With our present knowledge of the response of animals to the action of digitalis, the number of animals necessary for a single determination should be left to the judgment of the individual worker and dependent upon his experience. If extreme variants occur in a series, the entire group should be discarded and, independently from this, a new series of determinations undertaken. ER -
