TY - JOUR T1 - THE LIBERATION OF FORMALDEHYDE IN THE AQUEOUS HUMOUR OF THE EYE AFTER ADMINISTRATION OF HEXAMINE (UROTROPINE) JF - Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics JO - J Pharmacol Exp Ther SP - 231 LP - 239 VL - 38 IS - 2 AU - M. A.F. SHERIF Y1 - 1930/02/01 UR - http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/38/2/231.abstract N2 - 1. It is shown (a) the pH of the aqueous humour of a rabbit rises very rapidly when exposed to the air, (b) the pH of this fluid can be reduced by intravenous injections of acid sodium phosphate, (c) under suitable conditions, urotropine liberates formaldehyde in aqueous humour and cerebrospinal fluid of rabbits. 2. Keeping the dose of acid phosphate constant and varying the dosage of urotropine, a dose of 0.05 gram per kilogram still liberates formaldehyde in aqueous humour and in cerebrospinal fluid. 3. Varying the dosage of acid phosphate and keeping the urotropine dosage constant, no formaldehyde is formed when the intravenous dose of acid phosphate is below 0.25 gram per kilogram. 4. The possibility of formaldehyde being liberated in inflamed tissues after urotropine administration is discussed. ER -
