The partition coefficient of chloroform between olive oil and water at 37.5°C. is 110. 3. Corpuscles contain more chloroform than the plasma and more than their additional lipoid content warrants. 4. Anesthesia is produced when the brain cells contain about half the amount of chloroform that they can contain without the death of the animal. The passage of chloroform into the brain cells is progressive. 5. The data presented in this paper do not support the Meyer-Overton hypothesis of anesthesia.
