MITCHELL YR 1973 UL http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/185/2/300.abstract AB The effect of experience in the hot-plate procedure on the response to acute and chronic doses of morphine was examined. It was found that a diminution in response to morphine was brought about by the repeated exposure to the test procedure in the absence of drug (initial behavioral tolerance). In addition, there was a diminution in response brought about by an interaction between the exposure to the test procedure and the presence of the drug (chronic behavioral tolerance). Tolerance occurring as a result of the repeated administration of the drug alone also was observed (pharmacologic tolerance). The results also show that 1) the interval between the tests is an important factor in the development of both initial and chronic behavioral tolerance and 2) pharmacologic tolerance develops less rapidly than behavioral tolerance and is influenced both by the frequency of administration and by the magnitude of the dose. © 1973 by The Williams & Wilkins Co.
