In all types of fiber, alkaline anesthetic solutions were more effective in sheathed preparations, and neutral anesthetic solutions were more effective in desheathed preparations. These results have confinned our earlier conclusion that the cation is the active form of local anesthetics and that the uncharged molecule is important only for penetration to the receptor site.
