The biological activities of these aldehydes have been assayed on isolated smooth muscle preparations. At concentrations several hundred times higher than the parent amines, the aldehydes were found to be totally inactive and to have no inhibitory or potentiating effect on the activity of the amines. The aldehydes were found to be taken up and metabolized by the smooth muscle preparations, showing that inactivity was not due to impermeability. The Williams & Wilkins Company
