This effect is observed with fresh, but not with aged, homogenates and appears to be related to a suppression of oxaloacetate accumulation, possibly through inhibition of malic dehydrogenase. The results bear considerable similarity to those obtained by other investigators who studied the effect of thyroxine on succinate oxidation.
