In accordance with this hypothesis, D(-)-, L(+)- and DL-lactoylcholines, DL-glyceroylcholine and DL-lactoyl-DL-(β-methylehOline) were synthesized. The pharmacodynamic properties of the new compounds were evaluated on (a) the blood pressure of the anesthetized dog, and (b) the isolated guinea-pig ileum. The acute toxicity of the new choline esters was determined in mice. The significance of the results was discussed. The isomeric ratios between the enantiomers of lactoylcholine indicate that asymmetry in the acyl-component is a significant factor in the muscarinic and nicotinic effects of cholinomimetic esters.
