The isoproterenol responses were modified in dogs in which the heart was replaced by a mechanical pump. The heart may contribute to the reversal observed in intact dogs. However, isoproterenol reversal can be demonstrated to cause increases in the peripheral resistance and contractions of the nictitating membrane.
