This rules out the possibility of the antagonism of the ergot alkaloids towards this inhibitory effect of epinephrine and norepinephrine being due to any stimulating effect on the intramural ganglia or to a potentiating action on cholinergic responses in the intestine. The papaverine-induced inhibition of the pendulum movements of the isolated rabbit intestine is not antagonized by these alkaloids in doses sufficient to antagonize the effect of epinephrine and norepinephrine. The antagonism of the ergot alkaloids to the inhibitory action of epinephrine and norepinephrine on the intestine is therefore specific. %U https://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/jpet/112/2/185.full.pdf
