Reinhard YR 1951 UL http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/102/2/132.abstract AB A laboratory method for the quantitative study of drug action on ciliated epithelium has been described. Results obtained with typical vasoconstrictor, antihistaminic and antibacterial drugs are presented. Substances implicated in the allergic state appear to have no direct action on isolated mammalian cilia. A parallelism between cellular irritation and loss of ciliary motility has been observed. It is suggested that changes in membrane permeability lead to the extrusion of viscid globoid bodies which in turn prevent ciliary motion.
