Abstract
1. Veratrine inhibits the oxygen uptake of mammalian muscle, kidney, and liver. It is between 100 to 150 times more toxic than urethane. It has no effect on the respiratory quotient.
2. Veratrine has no effect on the oxidation of lactic and succinic acids, accelerates the oxidation of tyramine and completely inhibits the oxidation of proline and xanthine by liver.
3. Both veratrine and urethane in small concetrations accelerate the oxygen uptake of yeast whereas in large concentrations they inhibit.
