Abstract
It has been shown that phenelzine and phenylisopropylhydrazine are equivalent to codeine in inhibiting phenylquinone-induced writhing in mice. These enzyme inhibitors were more potent than codeine in elevating the threshold of response in the hot plate method, i.e., at comparable levels of analgesia, the doses of isopropylhydrazine and pheneizine were lower than that of codeine. The analgesic activity is independent of monoamine oxidase inhibition and brain levels of serotonin and catecholamines.
