SUPPLEMENTAL VIDEO S1 LEGEND. Operations of the sample delivery system. Frontabove
view of the sample delivery system; the lid of the cabinet housing the x-y motion table is
removed. At the beginning of a trial, the x-y motion table moves to the wash station position and
the pipette tip is lowered into the water-filled Eppendorf tube for a wash cycle. Water is
withdrawn from and dispended back into the tube once. Then, the pipette is raised above the
plate, and the 96-well plate immediately is moved to a position aligning a single randomly
selected well (containing taste stimulus solution) with the pipette tip. The pipetted is lowered so
that the tip enters the well to withdraw 200 μl of solution.

SUPPLEMENTAL VIDEO S2 LEGEND. Responses recorded on the touch-sensitive
display and consequences to the responses. At the beginning of the first segment of the
video clip, the 8x12 matrix appearing to the right of the response field initially shows that 18
trials have occurred, the first 4 of which were errors (touch responses occurring outside of the
target designated for the training cue or control standard on that trial, indicated by red “X”s in
the cells of the matrix). Each of the errors had been penalized by a reduction of 10 points
($0.10) from the cumulative score; the 5th trial was a correct response, but slightly off-target
from the central coordinates, and thus had been reinforced with a red, $0.10 poker chip. The
following 13 trials had been correct responses centered within the “bullseye” (each reinforced
with blue, $0.20 poker chips). The lower left ticker beneath the matrix indicates that 78 trials
remain, and the ticker on the lower right of the matrix shows that the current score is 230 ((13 x
20 + 10) – (4 x 10), the equivalent to $2.30). The next response—correct—occasions a positive
reinforcer (blue, $0.20 poker chip and “cha-ching” sound), raising the score to 250 ($2.50). Both
tickers adjust accordingly.
By the start of the next segment of the video, an additional (20th) trial has already happened,
that trial having resulted in an error (red “X” in the 20th cell of the matrix). The next response
also is an error and occasions a penalty—point reduction of 10, buzzer and timeout.
