Abstract
1.The n- and iso-butyl ethers of formocholine have a marked "muscarine" action: the iso-compound was about twice as active as the n-compound and was also more toxic. Both compounds have a marked (stimulating) nicotine action.
2. The allyl ether of formocholine had an action very similar to that of the iso-butyl ether; its toxicity for mice was also about the same as that of the iso-butyl ether (and also of that of neurine).
3. The introduction into the benzene ring of the phenyl ether of choline of a hydroxyl or of a methoxy group diminished the (stimulating) nicotine action of the compound; the effect of a benzoyloxy group in this respect was still greater; an acetamino group seemed to abolish the nicotine action. None of these compounds had a muscarine action. All of these compounds were less toxic than the phenyl ether of choline; the benzoyloxy compound was the least toxic.
