Abstract
1. The effects of toxic extracts prepared from fresh and dried ascarids of the pig have been studied on isolated contracting segments of the intestine of rats, cats, guinea-pigs and rabbits.
2. The effects produced by the ascarid extract were an increase in the tonus and an increase in the rate of contraction of the muscle.
3. The several extracts studied differed among themselves in the amount of toxic substances present but the general type of reaction was similar in all.
4. The extract of the cuticle was more potent than any of the other extracts except that prepared from the dried ascarids.
5. When administered to the living animal, ascarid extract produced colicky symptoms, diarrhea, vomiting and frequent defecation.
6. The intestines of the guinea-pig are more sensitive and the intestines of the rat less sensitive to small amounts of the extract than are the intestines of the cat or of the rabbit.
7. Hemolytic properties of the extract were demonstrated on the red blood cells of rabbits and guinea-pigs.
8. The isolated uterus of the cat and of the rabbit responded to the ascarid toxins by an increase in tonus and activity.
