Abstract

Chloro (triethylphosphine) gold (SK&F 36914), a new gold compound, administered orally to rats, was equipotent to parenterally administered gold sodium thiomalate in suppressing the development of both the primary and secondary lesions of adjutvantinduced arthritis. Oral absorption of SK&F 36914 was also indicated by the presence of serum gold levels. In contrast, the clinically used gold salt (gold sodium thiomalate) did not produce a therapeutic effect or significant serum gold levels after oral administration to adjuvant arthritic rats. Oral administration of SK&F 36914 produced lower gold levels in both serum and kidneys than equivalent therapeutic doses of parenteral gold sodium thiomalate. Based on these findings, SK&F 36914 would appear to have potential as an agent for oral chrysotherapy.
