Abstract
Total body concentrations of estradiol-17β, estrone and their metabolites were measured in immature female rats at 5, 10, 20 and 40 min after the i.p. injection of 0.1 µg of tritiated estradiol-17β or estrone. Treatment of rats with phenobarbital for 4 days caused an accelerated disappearance of both estrogens from the whole animal and an enhanced formation of highly polar metabolites. Appreciable estrone was found in control rats injected with estradiol, whereas phenobarbital pretreatment decreased the amount of estrone found in rats injected with estradiol. This finding was explained by observations indicating that treatment of rats with phenobarbital had a greater stimulatory effect on the metabolism of estrone than on the metabolism of estradiol.
