Abstract
The metabolism by the chicken of orally ingested ethopaabate has been studied, and over 98% of the drug consumed has been accounted for in the urine. Of the urinary excreted drug, about 80 to 85%, on the average, has been isolated and identified as the following metabolites: 20% as 2-ethoxy-4-acetamidobenzoic acid, 15% as 2-ethoxy-4-aminobenzoic acid, 25% as 2-ethoxy-4-amino-5-hythoxybenzoic acid-5-O-sulfate and about 25% as two individual fractions consisting of unidentified conjugates of one or the other of the above first two metabolites. All but the 5-hydroxylated metabolite and about 10% of unknown products are convertible to m-phenetidine, which is the basis of the convenient assay for ethopabate in biologic media.
