Abstract
Benzquinamide was a specific antagonist of 5-HT on isolated guinea-pig trachea but not on guinea-pig ileum. The compound inhibited 5-ITT on rat uterus although not in a concentration-related manner. Benzquinamide was a surmountable antagonist to 5-HT-induced bronchoconstriction in the intact guinea pig. The effect of 5-HT on guinea-pig trachea did not depend upon the activation of a cholinergic mechanism as it does, in part, in guinea-pig ileum. The 5-HT receptors in guinea-pig trachea resemble "D" (muscle) receptors in that they were not blocked by atropine or by morphine, but were blocked by methysergide.
