Abstract
Senecioylcholine (β,β-dimethylacrylylcholine, SCh) was synthesized from choline bromide and senecioyl chloride.
Senecioylcholine was found to be a ganglion stimulant. A number of its actions are described: 1. SCh produced a pressor response in the absence of atropine. This effect was partially blocked by adrenalectomy and almost completely abolished by ganglionic blockade. 2. The pressor response to SCh was reversed by adrenergic blockade. 3. SCh produced a contraction of the nictitating membrane. This action was antagonized by ganglionic blockade. 4. SCh produced contractions of the isolated frog rectus abdominis.
The results are discussed in terms of known structure-activity relationships.
