Abstract
The analgesic, respiratory and subjective effects of 4-acetoxy-3-methyl-1-(phenylethyl)-4-0-tolylpiperidine hyrochloride have been studied in man. This compound has demonstrated a remarkable quantitative dissociation in the analgesic, respiratory and emetic activities considered to be obligatory side actions of potent analgesics. In doses which produce analgesia
equivalent to morphine, this compound produced severe respiratory depression, minimal nausea and no vomiting. The significance of the demonstration of this dissociation has been discussed.
