Abstract
EPDA (N-ethyl-3-piperidyl diphenylacetate), EPB (N-ethyl-3-piperidyl benzilate), MPDC (N-methyl-3-piperidyl diphenylcarbamate), and PIH (β-phenylisopropylhydrazine) prolonged the sleeping time of certain barbiturates, the effect being dependent upon the particular barbiturate selected.
Studies employing whole body concentration of hexobarbital and pentobarbital, isolated rat liver perfusions, and measurements of BSP retention point to effects of the prolonging agents on drug metabolism as a major factor in explaining the observations made.
In comparing the inhibitory spectrum of activity of these agents on drug metabolism, it was found that MPDC was relatively most specific, EPB was next and PIH was least specific.
