Abstract

The ability of microsomes from liver of male rats to form o-aminophenol glucuronide in vitro was 4-fold greater than that of microsomes from female rats. In male rats treated chronically with estradiol, the glucuronyl transferase activity in liver microsomes was reduced, while administration of testosterone to female rats increased this enzyme activity.

The administration of a single dose of benzpyrene produced an increase in adult male and female glucuronyl transferase activity within 48 hours, the effect on males being moderate, while a marked increase was noted in females. A single dose of 3-methylcholanthrene produced a marked increase in glucuronyl transferase activity in male weanling rats. Treatment of female rats with testosterone and benzpyrene gave a greater than additive effect. In addition, a stimulation of glucuronyl transferase activity in neonatal rats and guinea pigs following benzpyrene treatment was noted.
