Abstract
Reserpine and alseroxylon were tested in dogs to determine their anti-emetic action against apomorphine-induced emesis. The Rauwolfia alkaloids were also tested against emesis induced by morphine, ergot (Hydergine), veratrum and oral copper sulphate.
Reserpine and alseroxylon are markedly effective in antagonizing apomorphine-induced emesis. They also protect against vomiting evoked by morphine and ergot, but they are ineffective against emesis induced by veratrum and oral copper sulphate. The pattern of anti-emetic action suggests that the mechanism of action is a selective depression of the medullary emetic chemoreceptor trigger zone.
