Abstract
1. Serum levels of Aureomycin in rats and guinea pigs have been determined after oral doses ranging from 6 to 800 mgm. per kgm.
2. In general, an increase in dose did not give a proportional increase in serum concentration of Aureomycin.
3. When certain adjuvants were administered simultaneously with oral doses of Aureomycin or Terramycin, serum levels of these drugs in rats were increased up to tenfold. The most effective of these adjuvants were: citric acid, trisodium citrate, malic acid, tartaric acid, malonic acid, pyruvic acid, monosodium phosphate, tricarballylic acid and lactic acid.
4. The enhancement effect on serum concentrations of Aureomycin of these various adjuvants was apparent within one hour and lasted at least eight hours after the dose was administered. The effect was found in doses of Aureomycin varying from 8 mgm. to 200 mgm. per kgm.
5. Possible mechanisms of this effect are discussed.
