Airway mechanics and methods used to visualize smooth muscle dynamics in vitro
2009, Pulmonary Pharmacology and TherapeuticsCitation Excerpt :Various in vitro models, based on isolated airway or vascular smooth muscle, have been adopted to address ASM force, shortening and shortening velocity, and possible abnormalities in these responses in disease. Tissue organ bath preparations using isolated trachea, bronchi or vessels, are well established [29–32] and best suited to investigate large rather than peripheral airway function. A deficiency of many such preparations is that normal tissue interactions that exist between ASM and other cell types in the airway and lung are absent.
