Elevated expression of forkhead box protein O1 (FoxO1) in alcohol-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction
2013, Acta HistochemicaCitation Excerpt :Our observations indicate that this alcohol-induced disruption of intestinal barrier integrity is dependent on alcohol activation of FoxO1. Several previous reports have shown that alcohol exposure induces oxidative stress in the intestine, and inhibition of oxidative stress alleviates the gut leakiness (Kaur et al., 1998; Forsyth et al., 2009; Keshavarzian et al., 2009). Furthermore, accumulating evidence from different types of mammalian cells reveals that oxidative stress regulates FoxO1 expression, nuclear localization and target gene activation under various cellular stress stimuli (Teixeira et al., 2010; Sengupta et al., 2011; Shen et al., 2012).
