These presynaptic receptors, demonstrated in the noradrenergic system, peripherally as well as centrally, represented a novel concept in our understanding of chemical neurotransmission (reviewed in [1–5]). This mechanism enables retrograde transfer of information through a negative feedback mediated by NE, and fulfills an autoregulatory function to maintain homeostasis during the transmission process.
Possible role of dopamine D1-like and D2-like receptors in behavioural activation and evaluation of response efficacy in the forced swimming test
2012, NeuropharmacologyCitation Excerpt :In the framework of the proposed hypothesis, one might suggest that blockade of dopamine D2-like receptors impaired the mechanism of evaluation of response efficacy, thus leading to an “indefinite” (within the 15-min session) persistence in emitting a costly but ineffective response. Additionally, on the basis of the present evidence that the climbing response (in these experimental conditions, see above) appears to depend directly on dopamine D1-like receptor stimulation, one might suggest that the persistently higher levels of climbing observed after treatment with raclopride might be explained by an increased dopamine D1-like receptor stimulation, due to increased dopamine levels as a consequence of dopamine D2-like autoreceptor blockade (see Langer, 1997). No differences between the vehicle and the raclopride-treated groups were observed in the session performed 24 h later, nor did the same treatments performed 24 h before a single 5-min test exert any significant effect.
