2017, PhytochemistryCitation Excerpt :In addition, three undescribed esters of the triterpene lanosta-7,24-dien-3β-ol, stearate, eicosanoate and docosanoate (6–8), were also identified as components of this extract. A total of eighteen phenolic compounds were also isolated from the transformed roots: 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (17) (Ha et al., 2000), 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (18) (Lin et al., 2005; Ampofo and Waterman, 1986), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (vanillin) (19) (Challice et al., 1980), 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (protocatechuic acid) (20) (An et al., 2006), a mixture of eicosyl, heneicosyl, docosyl, tetracosyl and hexacoxyl ferulate (21–25) (Kawanishi et al., 1990; Baldé et al., 1991; Bernards and Lewis, 1992), ethyl ferulate (26) (Wu et al., 2004), ethyl caffeate (27) (Noshita et al., 2006) and ethyl 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)lactate (28) (Hou et al., 2002). Now, the absolute configuration of this last compound was determined by comparison of the optical rotation with that of methyl ester 29 (Kelley et al., 1975).

It comprises about 40 genera and 1200 species, with Garcinia (Rheedia) being the most numerous genus at about 400 species, which are widely distributed in tropical Asia, Africa, New Caledonia, Polynesia and Brazil (Ampofo and Waterman, 1986). Garcinia species are known to be rich in secondary metabolites, such as prenylated and oxygenated xanthones (Cui et al., 2010).
