N-a-acetylcitrulline is an N-acetylated metabolite of citrulline which is made from ornithine in the urea cycle, and it is also an important intermediate in arginine biosynthesis involved in immunity, metabolic regulation and hormone secretion (Bush et al., 1992). Lower concentrations of N-a-acetylcitrulline in the IBU treated samples in our study indicated an acetylation deficiency, but efficient acetylation is necessary to protect organisms from the accumulation of citrulline, ammonia and carbamylphosphate which can lead to liver diseases and the abnormal development of portal collateral circulation (Adeva et al., 2012).
