      Serotonin (5HT) is an effective pulmonary vasoconstrictor and induces vascular smooth muscle hyperplasia (Launay et al., 2002; MacLean et al., 1996). 5HT is a key determinant of vessel remodeling and high 5HT levels had been reported in platelets and plasma from PAH-patients (Hervé et al., 1995). PAEC can produce high levels of this amine under pathological conditions and promote proliferation and contraction of PASMC (Eddahibi et al., 2006).
