The Scandinavian Simvastatin Survival Study noted reduction in cholesterol levels reduced the risk of new or progressive claudication.33 The Collaborative Atorvastatin Diabetes Study (CARDS) examined statins in patients solely with type 2 DM, and demonstrated a significant reduction in cardiovascular events irrespective of baseline low-density lipoprotein (LDL) level.34

2010, Clinical NutritionCitation Excerpt :In addition, specific (and general) information on dietary data collection methods, dietary analysis outcomes or procedures to assure dietary adherence were generally not reported. In most of the studies,21,22,24,25,28,31–34 various dietary advice was provided for a pre-entry period to identify subjects with cholesterol levels consistent with the study inclusion protocols, and therefore was not included in the published analyses. The 4S study21,24,25,31–34 included a vague statement about dietary advice on lipid lowering being made according to the “European Atherosclerosis Society” prior to drug treatment, but provided little information on how this information was conveyed to patients and mechanisms to determine if indeed such recommendations were adopted and adhered to by patients.
Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Older Adults
2009, Clinics in Geriatric MedicineCitation Excerpt :However, the trial was terminated prematurely due to findings in the larger population sample, thereby underpowering the older adult subgroup analysis. Several trials have investigated statins for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in adults with diabetes.36–60 In general, these trials demonstrated a beneficial effect of statins on lipid profiles and a reduction in cardiovascular events.
