Acute oral ethanol exposure triggers asthma in cockroach allergensensitized mice
2012, American Journal of PathologyCitation Excerpt :Of the six groups of mice, Te was only increased in sensitized mice gavaged with ethanol (Figure 7A). One hallmark of asthma is bronchial mucus production, which may account for airway luminal occlusion40 and lead to intrapleural airway obstruction and increased expiratory time.41,42 Mucin production was investigated in PAS-stained lungs of normal mice and normal mice gavaged with water or ethanol and sacrificed 30 minutes postgavage.
Pharmacological antioxidant strategies as therapeutic interventions for COPD
2012, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta - Molecular Basis of DiseaseCitation Excerpt :Furthermore, anti-inflammatory action of carbocysteine has been well documented in models of pulmonary inflammation involving several different cytokine profiles and it has been shown to protect against emphysema induced by cigarette smoke in rats [142]. In carrageenan-induced pleurisy, oral administration of S-CMC-lys has been shown to attenuate neutrophil recruitment in acute IL-1β-induced airway inflammation and neutrophil, macrophage and eosinophil migration into the pleural space [143]. Carbocysteine-mediated attenuation of mucus glycoproteins hypersecretion and reduced inflammatory cells, free radical and elastase activity in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of rats with sulfur dioxide-induced airway inflammation have been reported [144].
