    Positive associations between the grey matter volume of the cerebellum, hippocampi, frontal and parietal regions and the duration of METH abstinence suggest that protracted abstinence benefits the recovery of cognitive functioning in former users (Nie et al., 2021; Zhang et al., 2018). Additionally, microglial activation, dopamine terminal damage, and brain metabolism seem to at least partially recover after prolonged METH abstinence of at least 9 to 12 months (Sekine et al., 2008; Volkow et al., 2001a; Wang et al., 2004). In the current meta-analysis, the mean abstinence duration was however only 5.87 ± 8.89 months.
