2018, Medical HypothesesCitation Excerpt :Biochemical analysis has identified two homologous polypeptides, α1 (48 kDa) and β (58 kDa), making a pentameric structure with a ligand-gated channel for Cl− [1]. Distribution of GlyRs has been investigated by autoradiography using 3H-strychinine, a selective antagonist for GlyRs [11], and by in situ hybridization histochemistry using an antisense oligo probe against GlyR α1 subunit mRNA [8]. Both publications revealed that GlyRs are mainly expressed in the lower brain, including spinal cord and medulla oblongata.
