Neuromediators and defensive responses including tonic immobility (TI): Brain areas and circuits involved
2022, Progress in Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :The authors interpretation was that acetylcholine stimulates the release of opiates by the interneurons of the ventrolateral PAG. It has to be underlined that, in the PAG of some mammals such as in cats, there are no acetylcholine neurons but there are muscarinic receptors (Vincent and Reiner, 1987); the latter, in humans, have been localized on enkephalinergic/endorphinergic interneurons of the ventrolateral PAG (Cortes et al., 1984). In rats, morphine injection into the ventrolateral PAG elicits analgesia (Depaulis et al., 1987) and, in the PAG, opioids decrease the tonic inhibitory activity of GABAergic interneurons and therefore disinhibit the PAG output neurons responsible of TI modulation (Moreau and Fields, 1986).
Cyto- and receptor architectonic mapping of the human brain
2018, Handbook of Clinical NeurologyCitation Excerpt :Regional differences include: all muscarinic receptors: inferior olivary nucleus < substantia nigra < locus coeruleus < periaqueductal gray, raphe nuclei (Cortés et al., 1984); M1: pons = globus pallidus > substantia nigra > ncl.
Effects of galanin subchronic treatment on memory and muscarinic receptors
2015, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :In preparation for the receptor and G protein autoradiography, coronal tissue sections (20 μm) were obtained and mounted on gelatine-coated slides. Total MR density was labeled using the protocol described by Cortés et al. (1984), with some modifications (Rodríguez-Puertas et al., 1997b). Coronal tissue sections were air-dried for 15 min at room temperature and were then incubated in 50 mM PBS (HNa2PO4, H2NaPO4; pH 7.3) for the same time.
