Estrogen Regulation of Neurotransmitter and Growth Factor Signaling in the Brain
2017, Hormones, Brain and Behavior: Third EditionActivation of D<inf>2</inf> dopamine receptors inhibits estrogen response element-mediated estrogen receptor transactivation in rat pituitary lactotrophs
2013, Molecular and Cellular EndocrinologyCitation Excerpt :Estrogen and dopamine antagonize each other to finely regulate lactotroph endocrine functions including the secretion (Lloyd et al., 1975; Raymond et al., 1978; West and Dannies, 1980) and synthesis of PRL (Maurer, 1982a), lactotroph proliferation (Elias and Weiner, 1987; Lloyd et al., 1975), and gene expression (Borgundvaag et al., 1992; Gómez and Balsa, 2004; Hyde et al., 1992). The antagonizing effect of estrogen on dopamine action is attributable to a decreased number of D2 receptors (Heiman and Ben-Jonathan, 1982; Kukstas et al., 1991; Pasqualini et al., 1986) or attenuated functional coupling of the D2 receptor with its downstream effectors (Gudelsky et al., 1981; Munemura et al., 1989) including guanine nucleotide regulatory proteins (Bouvier et al., 1991; Livingstone et al., 1998) and adenylate cyclase (Maus et al., 1989). Little is known, however, about the mechanism of the antagonizing effect of dopamine on estrogen action.
