2018, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta - BiomembranesCitation Excerpt :It is characterized by lower interindividual differences and it is resistant to external factors. The inhibition of AChE activity in blood is correlated with its inhibition in target tissues as indicated in earlier studies [29,44,47]. The inhibition of erythrocyte AChE activity is useful biomarker of the exposure to many chemical and physical toxic factors [10,37].

2014, Ecotoxicology and Environmental SafetyCitation Excerpt :The exact role of the erythrocyte AChE is unclear (Rosenberry and Scoggin, 1984), but it does not appear to take part in neurotransmission (Padilla et al., 1994). Nonetheless, the erythrocyte AChE activity has been demonstrated to correlate with that of the brain AChE, making it a valuable marker to study neuroregulatory disruption (Castoldi et al., 1993; Padilla et al., 1994; He, 1999; Lionetto et al., 2013). Therefore, the decrease in erythrocyte AChE activity reported here may indicate that similar changes are occurring in target tissues, such as the central nervous system and the muscles.
