The GLT-1 enhancer clavulanic acid suppresses cocaine place preference behavior and reduces GCPII activity and protein levels in the rat nucleus accumbens
2022, Drug and Alcohol DependenceCitation Excerpt :Once cocaine reward has been established, the mechanism underlying CLAV efficacy in reducing the expression and maintenance of the rewarding strength of cocaine may be related to normalization of glutamate dysregulation that occurs during cocaine exposure and abstinence. It should be noted, however, that modulatory effects of CTX on dopamine transmission cannot be excluded, as CTX reduces locomotor activation caused by acute cocaine exposure and locomotor activation caused by repeated caffeine exposure, both of which are endpoints involving enhanced dopamine transmission (Sondheimer and Knackstedt, 2011; Hsu et al., 2010; Garrett and Holtzman, 1994). The most unexpected finding in our study was that a single injection of CLAV reduced expression of an established cocaine CPP.
Caffeine increases alcohol self-administration, an effect that is independent of dopamine D<inf>2</inf> receptor function
2021, AlcoholCitation Excerpt :Finally, D2R antagonists, including eticlopride, attenuate the motor stimulant effects of caffeine (Garrett & Holtzman, 1994; Powell et al., 2001). Yet, in Experiments 5 and 6, caffeine was still able to elicit a significant increase in alcohol-reinforced responding, even at doses of eticlopride that were found to inhibit the stimulant actions of caffeine (Garrett & Holtzman, 1994). However, caffeine-induced alterations in motor activity and arousal cannot be definitively ruled out.
