Endocrine and metabolic effects of Trp-enriched diets for attenuation of chronic stress in the Senegal soles (Solea senegalensis)
2020, AquacultureCitation Excerpt :This could indicate that the increase of blood Trp would enhance the Trp / LNAA ratio and therefore a greater amount of Trp would cross the blood brain barrier towards the brain, increasing brain Trp levels (Johnston et al., 1990), as obtained in our most stressful treatment (continuous light, see below). In mammals, serotonin (5-HT) that is secreted into the blood is collected by the platelets in their entirety (Celada et al., 1994; Fozard, 1989; Martín et al., 1995). However, in fish, it does not happen in the same way since they do not have a cell storage group of 5-HT (Caamano-Tubio et al., 2007), hence the serotonin of the peripheral tissues is free in the blood.
Relations between peripheral and brain serotonin measures and behavioural responses in a novelty test in pigs
2013, Physiology and BehaviorCitation Excerpt :Platelet counts in whole blood and in PRP were determined with a Sysmex F-820 Counter. Serotonin in platelets represents > 95% of 5-HT found in blood [45–47]. Therefore, we multiplied platelet 5-HT level by the number of platelets counted in whole blood (109 cells/l) to obtain whole blood 5-HT.
