Comparison of estrogenic components used for hormonal contraception
2024, ContraceptionThe Green toxicology approach: Insight towards the eco-toxicologically safe development of benign catalysts
2021, Journal of Hazardous MaterialsCitation Excerpt :In the last few decades, various studies have shown that emerging pollutants or micropollutants influence the endocrine system of animals and can therefore have a negative impact on the ecosystem (Grund et al., 2011; Kidd et al., 2007; Sumpter and Johnson, 2008). One of these synthetic substances is 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), which is a main ingredient of commonly used contraceptives (Guengerich, 1990; Segner et al., 2013). As the endocrine system plays an important role for breeding, signal transduction and overall functioning of the organism, even small differences can have a rather high impact on the ecosystem as shown in the whole-lake study by Kidd et al. (2007).
