    The hypothalamic nuclei were selected since they are potently involved in the regulation of food intake and energy homeostatis (Kalra et al., 1999; Wynne et al., 2005). NPY has been also suggested to have affinity for sigma receptor (Roman et al., 1989). Correlation of NPY in hypothalamus, mainly at the level of ARC and PVN, with other systems like anorectic peptide cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) and leptin, is reported to regulate the energy homeostasis (Rohner-Jeanrenaud et al., 2002; Van Vugt et al., 2006).

    NPY and [Leu31,Pro34]NPY was also found to able to displace 17–35% of haloperidol sensitive [3H]SKF 10,047 binding in mouse hippocampal formation using quantitative ex vivo autoradiography, whereas the Y2 receptor agonist NPY13–36 had no such effects [4]. However, in rat brain homogenates, conflicting data did not prove whether NPY could bind to σ receptors with high affinity [27,31]. In this study, we aim to further explore the interaction between NPY and σ receptors, and to further test the hypothesis of inverse agonism.
