Influence of melatonin or its antagonism on alcohol consumption in ethanol drinking rats: A behavioral and in vivo voltammetric study
2012, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :Indeed, 1] administration of exogenous melatonin selectively increased the size without altering the red-ox potential value of the so called peak M; 2] treatment with 5-HIAA, serotonin catabolite, increased the size of peak 3 only; and 3] the administration of tryptophan [and na-5-HT] also increased peak 3 as well as peak M. This finding is in accord with previous observations that administration of 5-HT-releasing drugs to rats caused a dose- and time-dependent elevation of circulating melatonin levels during the day and night (Huether et al., 1993) and that pharmacological stimulation of serotonin activity results in promotion of melatonin secretion (Miguez et al., 1997; Olcese and Münker, 1994). It is also known that butyrate stimulates N-acetyltransferase (NA T) (Wiechmann et al., 1990) that is one of the key enzymes controlling the synthesis of melatonin.
