Protecting the retinal neurons from glaucoma: Lowering ocular pressure is not enough
2012, Pharmacological ResearchCitation Excerpt :In agreement with this notion, several studies suggest that citicoline induces, in the brain, an increase of different neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, including dopamine [178,179], which are crucial for neuronal communication, moreover levodopa (a precursor of dopamine used in Parkinson's disease therapy) has been found to improve retinal function in subjects treated with this substance [180]. Notably, dopamine is an important neurotransmitter in the mammalian retina [181,182,21] and certain RGCs may also use it to communicate with central visual areas [183]. Overall, the reported findings emphasize the importance of a neuroprotective strategy to prevent retinal neurodegeneration and suggest the potential use of citicoline, as well as of other neuroprotectants, in glaucoma therapy as a complement to the hypotensive treatment.
Age-dependent effects of modafinil on acoustic startle and prepulse inhibition in rats
2010, Behavioural Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :As hypothesized, amphetamine reduced PPI in both YA and MA rats, and slightly greater impairment (10% difference) was seen in the YA group compared to the MA group. Numerous studies have found reduced levels of DA and other neurotransmitters in various regions of the brain in aging rats [22,37,40]. To the extent that DA deficits affect neural substrates that mediate and regulate PPI, animals with lower endogenous levels of DA might be expected to exhibit more PPI in baseline conditions (consistent with the effects of DA antagonists) and less alteration of PPI from pharmacologic manipulations that alter DA levels or activity.
